Club History
Edgbaston Hockey Club - Established in 1885
We are the second oldest hockey club in England, and one of the largest, with 20 teams and 250 members.
But the club started modestly in back in 1885 when the club had just one men’s team who played at the tennis club on Edgbaston Park Road. In those days hockey was “men only” and the kit was a bit more formal too.

When the club celebrated its centenary in 1985, it had 5 men’s teams and 75 members. The club was based at Portway near Redditch and moustaches were all the rage.

Long before the arrival of the internet, the club ran a successful quarterly publication called “Cutting Edge” with news, views, results and articles of interest.

One thing has remained the same throughout the years – the fixture book. Pocket sized and prized by members as being their hockey bible, this little red and black book contained everything you needed to know about EHC.

In 1990 a ladies’ section was introduced and in 2005 the Junior teams were established.
Today EHC goes from strength to strength, playing in the heart of Edgbaston with 20 teams and 250 club members. The club has two experienced coaches who have both played National League hockey are dedicated to helping develop our elite players and an umpire coach dedicated to helping more members gain their Level 1 Umpire Qualification.
